Some great advice from our latest Q&A expert Rod Johnson!

Rod Johnson is founder and president of Growing Your Leaders, a talent and leadership development firm. As an executive coach, consultant, and keynote speaker, Rod works with organizations helping them understand, leverage and develop their strategic talent assets.

Our target markets include the coaching industry and Learning & Development industries. Our Peer Insight and SpotLight Card programs utilize a group learning/peer group methodology which aligns with much of Carl Rogers work. Our tools bring personal stories and insights to the table, where people learn  from people utilizing a structured process. Our tools are focused on   the Emergent Leader. I get excited when I see emergent leaders truly transform their beliefs, their confidence, and their physical presence. In essence, I get really excited when I see individuals find their voice and are ready to share it with their friends, their organization and with the world.

In 2015, I was honored to receive an award from Inc Magazine for being a Top 101 Leadership Speaker for your Next Conference.

My second most proud achievement is in the development of our BeBRAVE construct, which gets into the how a group should look, behave and perform.

My biggest inspirations have always come from the mentors in my life. The role of mentorship can be lost in the fast paced world of “getting stuff done.” Yet if we are going to truly develop 21st Century leaders, mentors will play an important and integral role. In my personal life, I can think of Ken Vanderburg – a sales manager. I remember Carl S. Akey, an individual that started a business in his later 70s – he always mentored his people. And then I can think of Myron Radio – he has been a close friend and mentor over the past 15 years.

Freedom to Learn by Carl Rogers – Although this book was published in 1969, I believe it is more relevant today than ever. It looks at personal development utilizing various group learning structures. In many respects, Rogers’ was ahead of his time. And unfortunately, while Rogers work is still taught in psychology classes, his insights into talent development has lost steam. Our Peer Insight and SpotLight Card tools embrace much of Rogers work and insights.

My most important piece of advice relates to “The Journey.” Too often we think of life in the framework of individual events. Some good. Some bad. Much non-eventful. However, life is a journey, and that journey will become our legacy. So we need to walk our walk with dignity, with respect, and with constant hope. Hope that tomorrow will be better than today. And at the end of our journey – there will be meaning, and the journey was worth it.
