Learning to trust your Higher Self every day
In the last article, we looked at how to quiet the mind enough to hear your Higher Self. This one asks what happens next when you start following what you hear.
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, ch. 64
After my son was born, I took part-time work so I could be with him. When his school start date finally came round, he couldn’t wait. I decided to restart my career. I spent weeks gathering vacancies and working through application processes.
Then I couldn’t fill the forms in. Every time I sat down to them I felt stressed, and put it off again. Eventually I asked my Higher Self what was going on. The answer came as a knowing rather than words: rip the forms up and bin them. It wasn’t advice not to start work. It was, now is not the right time.
Three weeks later our house caught fire and caused extensive damage. Nobody was hurt, but the aftermath took the next three months to put right.
Did my Higher Self know? I’ve no idea. What I do know is that the peace I felt when I stopped applying turned out to be well founded, and when I resumed the search, I was genuinely inspired and ended up in the job of my dreams.
Listening To Your Higher Self Is Not The Destination
Listening to your Higher Self is not the destination. It is the beginning of a different way of living, and that living looks less like certainty than most people expect.
Across this cluster, we’ve looked at how your Higher Self speaks through a quiet knowing rather than fear, how to tell it apart from the chatter of the ego, and how stillness makes it easier to hear. But knowing all that is one thing. Living by it is something else.
A guided life doesn’t mean withdrawing from the world or floating above your responsibilities. You still make decisions, face challenges and sit with uncertainty. What changes is your relationship with all of it; you stop trying to force life into the shape you think it should take and start working with it rather than against it.
Guidance Rather Than Control
Most of us were taught that success comes from thinking harder, planning further ahead and controlling as many variables as possible. Planning is valuable, but there comes a point where more thinking only creates more noise. The harder we try to predict every outcome, the more anxious we become, trapped in “what if” scenarios, hunting for a certainty that life was never going to provide.
Living a guided life doesn’t mean abandoning reason. It means letting your rational mind work alongside something deeper, a perspective your analytical mind can’t reach, because it isn’t caught up in fear, urgency or the need to control. The shift is a small one, and it changes everything: instead of asking “How do I make this happen?”, you begin asking “What feels most aligned with who I truly am?”
You Won’t Be Given a Map
Many people expect that once they connect with their intuition, uncertainty will disappear. The opposite is closer to the truth. Your Higher Self rarely hands over every answer in advance. There is no five-year roadmap and no guarantee that each decision will turn out as you pictured it. Usually, it lights up only the next step.
That can be maddening, because our brains crave certainty; uncertainty registers as a threat, which is why waiting for medical results, changing career or starting a relationship can be so tiring even when nothing bad has happened. Your Higher Self simply isn’t troubled by it. It sees further than your conscious mind can, so instead of demanding guarantees it encourages you to take the next right step and trust the path to keep unfolding.
I wasn’t told about the fire; I was told to put the forms in the bin. When I eventually applied for a job post-fire, the original job didn’t meet my salary expectations. I was, though, guided to take it, and within a relatively short period of time, I secured the job of my dreams. I realised that the original job was simply the route.
Guidance Looks Ordinary
People often expect revelations. Occasionally that happens; far more often it’s quiet. The feeling that prompts you to make a phone call you’ve been avoiding. The sense that an opportunity, impressive as it looks on paper, isn’t right for you. Choosing patience instead of the reaction you’d have been entitled to. Turning down a road without being able to say why.
These moments seem small at the time, and are often the turning points you only recognise years later. Living a guided life isn’t about waiting for the extraordinary; it’s about paying attention to ordinary moments with extraordinary awareness. And each time you follow one of those nudges, your confidence grows a little. Trust is built through experience, not blind belief.
When Guidance Doesn’t Make Sense
The real test comes when the guidance contradicts what you expected or wanted. Sometimes it asks you to stay where your ego wants to run. At other times, it asks you to let go of something you worked hard to build. Sometimes to have the uncomfortable conversation, or to wait when every instinct is screaming at you to fix it now.
This was especially true at the end of my marriage. I remember the moment I asked within whether this was the route to take, and I received a resounding positive. The subsequent fall-out was tough and painful for everyone involved. However, I know that I would never have traversed the path of wholeheartedly discovering my Higher Self if I had made a different decision.
Most of us can look back on something that felt at the time like failure, rejection or delay, and see now that it quietly redirected us towards something better. Living a guided life takes the humility to accept that we can’t see the whole picture while we’re standing inside it.
A Guided Life Is Not A Perfect Life
Connecting with your Higher Self doesn’t remove life’s difficulties. There will still be grief, disappointment and loss. Plans will still change, difficult people will still appear, and those you love will still make choices you can’t do anything about.
The difference isn’t in the events. It’s in how you meet them. Instead of being swept away by every challenge, you begin to find a steadiness that stays available even when things are uncertain. Fear still turns up; it simply stops running the decisions. Peace becomes something you carry with you, rather than something you hope your circumstances will eventually hand over. That quiet resilience is one of the clearest signs you’re beginning to live from your Higher Self.
Try This: Take The Next Step Only
Think of one situation you’re currently trying to force a decision you keep turning over, a problem you’ve been solving in your head at two in the morning. Stop trying to see the whole staircase.
Ask instead: what is the one next step? Not the plan, not the outcome, the single thing you could do this week. Then do that, and let the rest stay unresolved for now. Notice how much of the exhaustion was never the situation itself, but the effort of trying to see around a corner.
Where We Go Next
There’s a question you may be asking by now. If my Higher Self is always guiding me, why can’t I always hear it?
It isn’t that the voice went quiet. It’s that it gets drowned out by old habits, inherited beliefs, emotional triggers and patterns of thinking built up over a lifetime. Fear speaks loudly. The Higher Self whispers patiently. Telling them apart takes more than good intentions; it takes knowing yourself: the beliefs behind your decisions, the patterns behind your reactions, the habits that keep pulling you away from your own wisdom.
That is where we go next. Having found the quiet voice within, it’s time to understand everything that has been talking over it.
