In the whirlwind of today’s world, where uncertainty, complexity, and stress seem like constant companions, finding calm can often feel like an unattainable luxury. But what if I told you that amidst the chaos, you have the power of creating calm—not as a distant dream—but as a tangible, present gift? You don’t need to wait for perfect conditions. Finding calm is not a chase; it’s something you create.

This was one of the core insights shared during our most recent TruePower Leadership Roundtable, where we explored the concept of “Surfing the Unknown in Turbulent Times.” One issue that came up strongly, especially from roundtable attendees, was self-care—how essential it is for leaders to take care of themselves in order to thrive amid the constant chaos. And I want to share how you can bring the gift of calm into your own life

Finding Calm Amid the Chaos

What if calm wasn’t something external you have to find but something you could create right now, within yourself?

How different would your day be if you could tap into that inner peace no matter how chaotic the world gets?

This is not about escaping the challenges we face, but about leading from a place of stillness—even in the midst of them. It’s about tuning into your inner compass and allowing that quiet, unshakable calm to guide your decisions and actions.

The Struggle to Find Stillness

I’ve been where you are—feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, and worn out by the constant barrage of demands, both at work and in life. But here’s the truth: I’ve learned that in moments of turbulence, self-care is the antidote. This doesn’t mean you need a week-long retreat. What you need is to carve out moments for yourself—tiny breaks of stillness that help you reconnect and replenish your energy.

During the TruePower Leadership Roundtable, many leaders shared similar struggles, including stress, decision fatigue, and a sense of disconnection from their own purpose. These are the struggles many of us face daily as we try to juggle complex work demands, societal pressures, and the weight of our responsibilities. But what if self-care could be your power source?

Recognizing the Burnout Cycle

It’s easy to get caught in the grind—sacrificing your own needs for the sake of others or to meet deadlines. I’m sure you have been there. Maybe you’ve pushed yourself so hard that it feels impossible to stop. You tell yourself, “There’s no time for self-care. The work has to come first.”

This struggle—the feeling of being pulled in a hundred directions, the desire to ‘push through’ even when you know you’re burning out—is the Ick Moment. It’s that overwhelming sense that you can’t afford to pause, even when you feel like you’re at the edge.

But here’s the thing: not prioritizing yourself doesn’t serve anyone. You’re not helping your business, your team, or your community by running on empty.

Actionable Solutions for Creating Calm

So, how can you bring the gift of calm amidst the chaos? It’s simpler than it sounds. During the roundtable, we discussed practical ways to stay grounded, even in turbulent times. Here are the actions I encourage you to take to design your own mini retreat for peace:

  1. Start with a Soul-Checking Question:
Ask yourself, “What does my soul need today?” Let go of the pressure to have all the answers. Just listen. Whether it’s a walk in nature or an afternoon of quiet reading, trust that you know what will recharge you.
  2. Create Space in Your Day:
We don’t always have the luxury of an extended break, but we can create small, sacred moments. Disconnect for 90 minutes—no emails, no distractions. Go for a walk. Journal. Meditate. These breaks can make a world of difference in recharging your energy.
  3. Honor Your Body’s Signals:
Your body is your ally in this process. It knows when it’s time to rest, to stretch, to breathe. Listen to it. Take a moment to breathe deeply, stretch, or simply close your eyes and feel the stillness around you. These moments of self-care send a clear message to your body: “I am worthy of rest and rejuvenation.”
  4. Create Your Own Sanctuary:
Build a space—whether physical or mental—that supports your peace. In times of uncertainty, cultivating a sanctuary, a place where you can retreat, even for a few minutes, will make you more resilient and clear-headed.
  5. Tap Into Nature:
Nature, in all its simplicity, offers profound healing. Step outside. Feel the earth beneath you. Let the natural world remind you of your grounding and your connection to something bigger than yourself.
  6. Embrace the Art of Doing Nothing:
In a world that praises constant productivity, doing nothing can feel rebellious. But this act of pausing—of simply being—holds incredible power. As one leader from the roundtable shared, “When I allow myself to rest, I return stronger and clearer.”
