Solicitors are part of the UK’s legal backbone. They are there to help us understand the legal implications of big and small things: marriage, divorce, first homes, last homes, starting businesses and giving charity effectively. The profession is rightly respected and a career to aspire to. Over 150,000 practising solicitors are currently in the UK, and this number is increasing yearly. But why is the profession such a rewarding one?
The Right Side
Starting a career as a solicitor promises to be deeply rewarding – not just in the sense of achievement that comes from getting to grips with tricky corners of the legal system, but also concerning the help and advice you get to give from a position of expertise. Charity solicitors work in the best interests of non-profits and charitable organizations, helping their cause by helping them with legal frameworks and issues. But even solicitors who don’t directly work in the third sector can be helpful, whether fighting for a client in an acrimonious court case or compensation claim or helping a couple with the legal side of buying their first home.
Learning Opportunities
Becoming a solicitor is a challenge in and of itself. The route to accreditation alone is a long and difficult one, being a six-year process at minimum to gain the necessary higher education. However, the learning doesn’t stop even after becoming a solicitor; you are likely to specialize in one particular discipline, but there are always opportunities to further your understanding of the legal process and new challenges to discover with each client.
Potential for Growth
As you learn, you will become much more confident in your advice, representation, and knowledge. With knowledge and confidence together, you’ll be able to progress well in your career – in whichever direction you would like. There are many areas in which solicitors can specialize, making this career choice rewarding and highly customizable. Opportunities for promotion within your present firm are likely. However, a change of pace by moving to the third sector – or even the armed forces – is always possible.
Lucrative Career
Ultimately, becoming a solicitor means becoming set for life. Your expertise will always be in high demand as a solicitor, regardless of your specialism. This means you will be granted job security even in difficult times for workers. Entry-level solicitor jobs pay remarkably well, with a floor minimum of £25,000 and some positions starting at £40,000. Though you may be paying off tuition a little longer than your peers, you will be well-rewarded from the start.
